Celebrating an Icon: Nina Simone's Childhood Home

In June 2018, the National Trust launched a National Treasure campaign to preserve the childhood home of music legend Nina Simone. Sending powerful messages about racial and gender inequality that had never been heard before, Simone defied expectations of what a black female musician should sound like and became a Civil Rights Movement icon. Perched in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, a humble, three-room clapboard is where Simone honed the talent and ideas that shaped both her career and the social activism that was always interwoven with it. The National Trust, along with the Nina Simone Project, are planning to restore and reuse this National Treasure as a symbol of Simone's cultural and musical footprint. The goal of this event was to announce the partnership and build awareness.
